National Provider Identifier Numbers
Introduction
As of February 1st 2019, the Behavioral Health insurance companies that fund the services that Active Steps provide, require all staff to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI).
An NPI number is a unique 10-digit identification number issued to health care providers by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
All Individuals and Organizations who meet the definition of health care provider are eligible to obtain a NPI. At Active Steps. This includes all staff who have contact with clients and families.
If you already have an NPI number, please provide it to Lesly Preston, the Active Steps Custodian of Records. You can email the information to [email protected]
If you do not have an NPI number, you will need to obtain one.

CMS estimates that, in general, a health care provider who submits a properly completed, electronic application could have an NPI within ten days. However, experience suggests that the system does not always notify the applicant of their NPI number via email. Beginning 48 hours following completion of the application process, you should go to the NPI Registry (https://npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov) and search for your name to see if your NPI number has been assigned. When searching, you are only required to enter your first and last name and select your state.
